We have recently had a paper accepted in the Journal of Affective Disorders, examining whether personality traits typically associated with Borderline Personality Disorder, are related to the occurrence of postpartum mood episodes in women with bipolar disorder. We found that compared to women without a history of postpartum mood episodes, those who score higher on a questionnaire measure of Borderline personality traits were more likely to report a history of postpartum depression and less likely to report a history of postpartum mania or psychosis. Our findings may have implications for understanding the causes of the different types of postpartum mood episodes that women can experience and also for individualising risk prediction of these episodes in women with bipolar disorder during the perinatal period. We would like to thank all BDRN participants who contributed this data and for their ongoing support.
