Nick’s research focus is the molecular genetic investigation of bipolar spectrum mood disorders and psychosis. As well as leading the Mood Disorders Research Team and the Bipolar Disorder Research Network (BDRN), Nick is also an honorary consultant psychiatrist at Cardiff University, and heads the Cardiff University Psychiatry Service. His clinical interests lie in the diagnosis and management of bipolar spectrum disorders.
Our BDRN study aims to investigate how genetic factors and environmental factors (such as stressful life events) interact and influence susceptibility to bipolar disorder. It is hoped that by increasing our understanding of these factors developments may be made in the prevention and treatment of this debilitating disorder.
To date over 3,000 people have taken part in our bipolar disorder research. However, everyone’s experience of illness is different and it is important to see many more people to enable the best possible understanding of the broad spectrum of bipolar illness.
The Bipolar Disorder Research Network (BDRN) is being conducted by the Mood Disorders Research Team based jointly at Cardiff University and the University of Birmingham led by Professor Nick Craddock. We are aiming to find a further 3,000 people with bipolar disorder to help with our research. If you are interested in participating in our study please go to our contact us page.
The aim of this website is to provide information for all those interested in our major study aimed at investigating the underlying causes of bipolar disorder and related mood disorders. The links at the top of this page will take you to pages providing further information about the aims of our research, the media attention that the study has received, what is involved in participating in our study and the progress of our research to date.
